This year our school is renewing our Green Flag. We are on number 11! We are now Primary Climate Ambassadors.

Our new Green-School Code goes as follows:

Small steps matter, just wait and see,
A greener world starts with you and me!

Help us renew our Green Flag

Use these tips and we’ll have it in the bag!

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

  • Give clothes to relatives, charity shops or clothes bank.
  • Think before you bin it.
  • Recycle batteries in the school and use the recycling bank beside the school.
  • You could compost.

 SAVING ENERGY

  • Turn off the lights if no one is in the room.
  • Don’t leave anything on stand by.
  • Plug out anything you are not using.
  • Close doors so heat can’t escape.

SAVING WATER .

  • Don’t leave taps dripping.
  • Turn the tap off while brushing your teeth.
  • Use rain water to water your plants in the garden.
  • Fill the kettle with just enough water for your needs.

Reduce your own plastic waste : bring your own  reusable  shopping bags and reusable water bottle.

TRANSPORT

  • Walk; Cycle; Carpool; Park and stride; Park and ride and use public transport where possible.
  • If you buy local products it will decrease your carbon footprint and help those locally. Buy local; eat local.

 FOOD AND BIODIVERSITY

Biodiversity includes everything, from the tiny garden ant to the three hundred year old oak tree.

  • Most habitats are home to numerous species which are all dependent on that habitat and their inter-actions with each other. If a habitat is damaged or degraded, conditions may alter so that some species can no longer survive, thus decreasing the biodiversity of the planet.

 Food

  • Remember the five Rs,Refuse:say no-only take what you can eat. Reduce:Buy only what you need and monitor your waste. Reuse:store leftovers to enjoy the next day.Recycle:Turn your leftovers into something new and Rot:compost your food waste or ensure it goes into a brown bin.

Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement.

Dear Maureen and all at Scoil N Mhuire,

Your school’s dedication to the Green-Schools programme through all ten themes has helped us shape the programme for future students, and as such, we are delighted for you to take part in our latest programme development….

Primary Climate Ambassadors!

This exciting new programme has been designed by the Climate Action Team especially for 3rd to 6th class students. It is grounded in critical thinking and inquiry-based learning, providing an immersive experience for participants. We recommend that one class (or the Green-Schools Committee and Coordinator) takes the lead, but there will be lots of opportunities in the programme for the whole school community to get involved.

Your school will be awarded the Green Flag after two years and we ask that you complete a minimum of two climate challenges per year.

You will be delighted to hear that fifth class have taken the lead on this initiative this year. We have completed two climate challenges for this year and have recently named our team after much discussion.

Team name is: Road to Green (RTG)

We have just been informed that as of now we are joint third on the table. I've uploaded a screenshot of the table for you to see.
