Reading with our Buddy Classes

10th Apr 2025

Students reading with an older buddy or being read to, as well as reading aloud to them, can significantly enhance their reading skills for several reasons:

1️⃣ Modelling Fluent Reading: When students are read to or paired with an older buddy, they are exposed to fluent reading. This helps them understand proper pronunciation, intonation, and expression, which they can mimic in their own reading.

2️⃣ Building Confidence: Reading with a partner, especially an older peer, promotes a sense of security and reduces anxiety. This encouragement can help struggling readers build confidence, making them more willing to practice and improve their skills.

3️⃣ Enhanced Comprehension: Discussing the material with an older buddy or having stories read aloud provides opportunities for learners to engage with the content. This interaction can lead to better comprehension and understanding of the text.

4️⃣ Vocabulary Development: Hearing more experienced readers exposes students to a broader vocabulary. When older buddies read or discuss words, it can introduce students to new language and concepts that enhance their own word knowledge.

5️⃣ Encouragement of a Love for Reading: Reading with an older buddy can make the experience more enjoyable and engaging, especially on World 🌎 📚 Book Day. This positive association with reading fosters a love for books and learning, motivating students to read more often!

In summary, these practices create a supportive and engaging learning atmosphere that nurtures reading skills in various ways, ultimately contributing to improved literacy outcomes 👏🏼📈. Thank you so much for helping us out senior buddies and for being a great influence in your younger buddy’s school life and beyond. Junior buddies, well done to all of you for showing off your wonderful reading skills. Keep it up. Kids who read succeed 💪🏼📚
